Our 'Meet the Welder' series is back! This time we had a chat with Steve from Restore It.

Our popular 'Meet the Welder' series helps us, and you, get to know our customers and gain an insight into what our machines get up to once they leave us. To kick the series back off we had a catch up with Steve from the YouTube channel Restore It.

A bit of background....

Steve first approached our team via email back in March 2023. He was after a new MIG welder for the work that he was doing on his YouTube channel. Steve saw that we were attending the Practical Classics Restoration Show later that month and decided to pop along to see our machines, and meet the team for himself.

His initial enquiry was for one of our MIG-MTS-450. After discussing this with our team however, we recommended he go for our Pro-MIG 250. This unit was far better suited to his needs.

Restore It are currently working on building their dream workshop with all the tools and toys that are needed to get the job done right. The channel shows a variety of items being restored including Classic Cars, Antique/vintage tools, old toys and much more. Right up our street!

Here is what Steve had to say....

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Steve. I'm from Cambridgeshire and I've always been into tinkering with things, be it a car, an antique, or the tools I use to restore things. I also enjoy riding motorbikes and electric mountain bikes. I make sure I spend as much time in nature as possible and I've been doing YouTube full time now for just over five years.

What Welding Machines do you use?

I use an R-Tech 250 Amp Industrial Inverter Mig Welder

What Made you choose R-Tech over other brands?

Ever since I started welding I knew that someday I had to get an R-Tech machine. The reputation alone was enough to convince me, but after seeing them in action on YouTube and in forums, R-Tech was the obvious choice and it has proven itself in every way.

Where did you learn to weld?

YouTube and lots, I mean lots, of trial and error. I'm still very much learning to this day.

How did you get into the industry that you are in?

Simply through the love of doing it.

You have an impressive following on YouTube currently sitting at 538K Subscribers, what effect has this had on your business?

Oddly, YouTube is my only business at the moment and has been for the past five years. I have only ever had one official customer, and that was the Mercedes W123 project. I do however have plans to start taking on customer work, which the YouTube channel will help to promote, and will also provide opportunities for new content on the channel.

Do you have a favourite project that you have worked on?

My favourite project so far on the channel has to be the BMW E30 325i Sport restoration project. It's a staple for the channel and I've learned so much along the way. It's also so varied. From differential and engine rebuilds to welding the chassis, retrimming the seats and everything in between.

Any advice to someone who is learning to weld/restore?

Don't be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not making them, you're not making progress.
